The sports sector in Pakistan has long suffered from government neglect, which is why many national-level events have either been postponed or conducted with incomplete preparations. The National Games, one of Pakistan’s most prestigious sporting events, has also been affected by these challenges. However, after 18 years, its return to Karachi is a significant milestone that can play a vital role in promoting sports not just locally but also at the national level.
The National Games were first held in 1948 in Karachi, with the primary goal of promoting various sports, providing athletes with opportunities to excel, and identifying talent for international representation. Unfortunately, the event has consistently faced financial constraints, institutional conflicts, and lack of government seriousness.
The last National Games were held in 2023 in Quetta, but prior to that, the event remained inactive from 2012 to 2019. Given this history, hosting the 2025 edition in Karachi is undoubtedly a major step forward. However, it comes with its own set of challenges that must be addressed.
Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and commercial hub, is set to host the National Games after 18 years. While this presents a new opportunity for the city, several challenges need to be overcome to ensure its success.
In May, Karachi’s temperature can rise between 35 to 40 degrees Celsius, making it difficult for athletes to perform at their best. Even Sports Minister Sardar Bakhsh Mehr has acknowledged that hosting the event under such extreme conditions is a major challenge. This could particularly affect outdoor games such as athletics and football.
Karachi has a history of security issues during national and international sporting events. With thousands of athletes and officials arriving from across Pakistan, ensuring foolproof security will be critical for the success of the National Games.
The city’s sports infrastructure also requires significant improvements. Many stadiums, training centers, and other sports facilities need upgrades to meet the requirements of a national-level event. Ensuring proper accommodations, transportation, and medical facilities for athletes will be another key aspect of organizing a successful event.
Despite these challenges, Karachi’s hosting of the National Games after nearly two decades is a positive development. It offers a chance to revive Pakistan’s sports culture, engage youth in healthy activities, and identify new talent for future international competitions. With the right planning, investment, and government support, the National Games 2025 can set a new benchmark for sports events in the country.
